About Me

Hi everyone!  Welcome to Livinglargeaftercancer.com. My name is Heather and I am just a regular gal who is lucky enough to have kicked cancer’s butt twice, and now I am working on it again with a third type of cancer. I feel extremely blessed to be here and share my story and experiences with you.

I’ll be posting healthy vegan meals. Some with recipes and a few you can just toss together. Sometimes I will throw in a restaurant rating or new product I have discovered. Who doesn’t love good healthy plant-based meals that don’t involve harming animals? I will also be talking about things I love to do including traveling locally and abroad. It’s a big planet and I plan to see as much of it as possible! I love hiking, camping and backpacking. I’ll be experimenting with car camping this year as well. I’m an animal lover and advocate so I will be positing about my pets, wild animals, farm animals, spirit animals and anything in-between. How empty my life would be without those furry, feathered and sometimes scaly friends.

Launched in 2019 as a place for cancer survivors or anyone that is experiencing health trauma or chronic pain. This site is an uplifting, encouraging and supportive place to come together.

The idea to share my life was born in early 2019 while recovering from my tenth surgery. I’m ready to start living again, anxious for what the world holds for me. I hope you’ll share in my journey. Sarah Dessen once said, “If your forever was ending tomorrow, would this be how you’d want to have spent it? Listen, the truth is, nothing is guaranteed. So don’t be afraid. Be alive.” She couldn’t be more correct.

I was born and raised in Michigan, on the Lake Huron side, where I met my fabulous husband who was stationed at Wurtsmith AFB. From there we moved to the UK where our first daughter was born. After 4 very fun years in England his next and final base was McConnell AFB in Kansas where our second daughter was born. We lived and raised our kids in Wichita for the next 20 years! It was a decent place to live with a low cost of living but the trees are sparse and the land is flat.  I grew up in the land of pine trees, rivers and lakes; therefore it was fairly depressing for me and I really missed the 4 seasons. One night my husband came home and asked cautiously, “what do you think about moving to Connecticut”? My immediate response was, “how soon can we leave?” In 2014 we moved into our dream home in the northwest corner of the state in the Berkshire Mountains where we live happily with our 3 dogs and 4 cats.

I love to travel, hike, camp, garden, swim, kayak, paint, read, write and try anything that lights my fire.
